Primary

The primary department is made up of 2 rooms (upper and lower primary) containing multi-composite classes. Currently P1-3 has 14 pupils and P4-7 has 17 pupils. The lower primary is taught on a job share basis. The upper primary is taught by a full time teacher who is also principal teacher for the primary department.

We follow Scottish Curriculum guidelines in English Language, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Expressive Arts and Personal and Social Development. Primary pupils also have access to French which is taught by the secondary specialist. We are working towards implementing A Curriculum for Excellence and this session are focusing mainly on Health and Well Being.

Primary class visit to St Mary'sA major development in the primary section is the implementation of active learning and critical thinking skills. This should mean that pupils become more engaged with their learning, are more independent and motivated, and find learning more fun!

Due to the nature of the primary department we are able to get to know our pupils very well and work hard to meet their individual needs.

We have a weekly opportunity for the pupils in the two rooms to get together and lots more chances through the year for collaborative learning. We also enjoy learning in the wider community and have a number of trips throughout the school year. We provide art work for the Kalisgarth Care Home on a regular basis and visit to entertain residents around once a term.
